On display is an exhibit of photos and drawings of new species to science found in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Discover Life in America (DLIA) is the non-profit organization coordinating the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The ATBI seeks to identify every species that exists in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Scientists estimate that possibly up to 100,000 species live in the park, and as of today a little over 17,000 species have been documented. DLIA’s ATBI program has discovered over 900 species new to science and over 6,500 species previously not known to inhabit the park!

Working closely with scientists on the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) project, DLIA (Discover Life in America) presents a selection of species new to science that have been discovered in Great Smoky Mountains National Park since the project began in 1998. The exhibit demonstrates an array of images in varying formats because scientists have few specimens to work with. Scientists are still investigating these species, and have, in many cases just named the new species.

In addition, the species themselves are extremely diverse and therefore can only be represented in mediums specific to their form. Shown here are images of new species obtained with a variety of different methods, from microscope photography to drawings and sketches. Some show minute detail while others give more of a vague understanding of the specimen. All of these images, however, are important to DLIA and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in that they show the progress of the ATBI since its inception more than a decade ago.

CTV’s September First Friday event will feature Ijams Nature Center, a 275-acre wildlife sanctuary and environmental learning center celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Ijams provides community-wide connections and experiences through education, conservation, recreation and responsible environmental stewardship for all people.

East Tennessee Historical Society

The Museum of East Tennessee History will feature the infrared photographs of local photographer and businessman, Daniel Brent Golden, manager of Hart Graphics, Inc. In his artwork, Golden combines his two favorite avocations, photography and fly fishing, to create large panoramic images of North America’s fly-fishing waters. Golden has recently taken an interest in the invisible light of infrared (IR) photography, using this technology to capture waterways throughout East Tennessee. For this special First Friday exhibition, the Clinch, Watauga, and Holston rivers will be featured. The series has been praised as “hauntingly beautiful” and as “containing a vividness and depth matched only by our memories.”

First Friday guests are also invited to tour the new feature exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History, Vanishing Appalachia: Photographs by Don Dudenbostel, Field Recordings by Tom Jester, as well as the signature exhibition Voices of the Land. Guests will also enjoy refreshments provided by Club Leconte.

The “First Friday” evening is free and open to the public. The East Tennessee History Center is located at 601 S. Gay Street, across from the Tennessee Theater.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a collection of new works titled “Let’s Play with our Emotions” by Rafael Casco, the current Betsy Worden Memorial Artist-in-Residence at the Emporium Center.

The exhibition features works created during the time of Casco’s residency (April through September 2010) that were inspired by the Toltec tradition in which people learn to have and show total respect for themselves and those around them. Toltec tradition guides people to take care of their bodies, souls, and the planet. “I use my imagination and art work to create a reality in which the world is a place of justice and happiness,” says Casco. The exhibition includes acrylic paintings, airbrush technique, mixed media, plaster masks and sculptures, and hand-painted furniture and plates. Casco will also display a series of masks created by students with whom he works. “Let’s Play with our Emotions” will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 3-24, 2010. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on September 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Arts & Culture Alliance Presents the Tennessee Artists Association

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by the Tennessee Artists Association titled “The TAA Annual Fall Juried Show” and featuring original art by more than 40 Tennessee artists including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, photography, and mixed-media. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 3-24, 2010. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on September 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM, and awards for the show will be given at 6:00 PM.Please note, the Emporium will be closed on Monday, September 6, for Labor Day. Jacques Gautreau will be joining JulieApple this Friday in our Design Studio at 121 S. Gay Street to open “Knoxville in Light and Color”

Jacques Gautreau took up photography in the Loire Valley region of France where he grew up. He lived and worked in Paris for several years prior to moving to Knoxville, where his art has found a new h…ome in inner city landscapes and roadside distractions. In Knoxville, his work is currently shown at the Emporium galleries, the Northshore Brasserie, and McGhee-Tyson Airport. He has also been featured in Metro Pulse.

September’s artist is Starr Cline, an Oak Ridge based painter specializing in acrylics. Key features of her work include the use of unusual material textures including textiles and various paper fibers which give the work a tactile dimension which underscores the natural subjects which are the most common focus of her work. It is the artist’s belief that there is no need to explore overly complex subjects in order to create great work and that a truly great artist can say everything that needs to be said with just a flower.

Award-winning artist, Julie Bernal grew up in Bristol, Connecticut. She moved to Knoxville, Tennessee as a teenager and took many fine art classes at Farragut High School. Bernal continued her education with a degree in graphic arts from Pellissippi State Community College. Bernal is a full-time graphic designer at Moxley Carmichael, a premier public relations firm in downtown Knoxville. She has over six-years experience in the graphic design field. She spends much of her free time focusing on creating fine art. Bernal resides in East Knoxville with her husband, Julian.

“I wake up every day ready to create. I use my art as a way to capture specific moments and feelings. It is the best way for me to keep a journal of my life.”
