Yes, a new layout
I’ve designed a theme from scratch, hopefully things will be formatted better, and will make things easier to find and read. The photo in the header is one I took at sunrise of the Smoky Mountains a week ago. I will never tire of the beauty of this area.

A new venue, and a call for artists
A new business will be opening up, with their grand opening this First Friday, The Fortunate Traveler.
The Fortunate Traveler is a unique shop that gives customers a taste of different parts of the world. Art, jewelry, market goods, clothing, photography and travel tips can all be found inside. The shop was started by a young man who spent the past three years of his life traveling around the globe. Traveling on a tight budget, with just the essentials strapped to his back, he made his way through North, South and Central America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Along the way he volunteered with different organizations from Latin America to Africa. Since his travels, he has been back to Kenya and Guatemala several times to work at an orphanage and to help local missionaries. This shop is a way for him to bring awareness of those less fortunate, share a little piece of their world with you and to raise support for orphans by donating a portion of all sales.
You’ll find their address in the listings below.
Artists- they’re looking for artists to show their work there, so give Jeremy Curl a call.

Arts & Culture Alliance Presents “Reflections and Perceptions” in The Balcony
(10/19/2009/Knoxville) – The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new group exhibition in The Balcony featuring work by four local artists:
Elaine Barnes, glass and ceramic artist – “My work is often a reflection of the joy I find in nature, wildlife, and the beautiful world around me.”
Katie Gamble, painter – “I focus on the relationships of color and space and patterns of light and dark. I break down my subject into blocks of color, which has caused my work to develop a unique ‘chunky’ quality. My works are distorted but honest views of my world.”
Annamaria Gundlach, ceramic artist – “Clay comes to me in dreams whispering, ‘we are stuff as clay is made.’ My art is to give substance and voice to clay.”
Rob Knudson, photographer
The exhibition will be on display in The Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 6-25, 2009. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 6 from 5:00-9:00 PM. The Emporium Center is located at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Exhibition hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, November 7, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and Sunday, November 8, 12:00-5:00 PM in conjunction with the 15th Master Woodworkers Show coordinated by the East Tennessee Woodworkers Guild.
15th Master Woodworkers show coming to Knoxville
The East Tennessee Woodworkers Guild and the Arts & Culture Alliance present the 15th Master Woodworkers Show, November 6 – 8, at the Emporium Center. This biennial juried show highlights the handcrafted works of 25 craftspeople and artists of East Tennessee and the surrounding region and features many types of woodwork, from traditional to whimsical, including fine furniture, cabinetry, turning, sculpture and marquetry. The Emporium gallery provides an ideal environment in which to view the work and meet the artists.
The Show hours are: Friday, November 6, 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Saturday, November 7, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM; and Sunday, November 8, 12:00-5:00 PM. Admission is free. A public reception takes place on Friday, November 6, from 5:00-9:00 PM as part of First Friday activities in downtown Knoxville.
Furniture maker Brian Boggs, previous Best of Show recipient of Providence, Rhode Island’s Fine Furnishings Show, noted the high quality of Knoxville’s Master Woodworkers event. “Over the past few years I have attended several fine shows around the country,” said Boggs. “By far the finest show I participated in was the Master Woodworkers Show in Knoxville. From any perspective I would judge the show, such as the quality of other woodwork, my own sales, and attendance and level of sophistication of the patrons, the Master Woodworkers Show is far ahead of the others. Whether you are looking for exquisite furniture for your home, or just looking for an inspiring outing, this is a show to be a part of.”
Among the participants in this year’s show are the following notable artisans:
* Alfred Sharp of Woodbury, TN. Sharp was the recipient of the 2008 Cartouche Award from the Society of American Period Furnituremakers.
* Curtis Buchanan of Jonesboro, TN. Buchanan’s chairs were recently commissioned for the Tennessee Governor’s mansion.
* Al Hudson of Knoxville, TN. Hudson showcases 70+ years of experience, specializing in one-of-a-kind, period furniture.
* Anthony Hayzen of Knoxville, TN. Hayzen’s marquetry won first place at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking 2004 professional competition.
Admission is free, and the public reception features music by “Naturally Decaffeinated”, a blues guitar and harmonica duo.
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance are pleased to present Arts in the Airport, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from 31 artists in Tennessee and Georgia. The contemporary 2-dimensional artwork will be exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint through April 22, 2010. You can see previews of the artwork on display here.
November 6, 5:30 PM: Artist Paula Clendenin exhibits at Pellissippi State
Clendenin grew up in the small Appalachian coal-mining town of Cedar Grove, WV, and she uses the inspiration of her childhood surroundings as the primary source of her art. Clendenin’s artwork is evocative of environmental concerns about coal mining and mountaintop removal. “I have always been interested in things that require a closer look in order to be appreciated,” said Clendenin. “Multiple layers and layered meanings distill into a singular visual thought, into a form that evokes an inner recognition, a form that suggests the resonance of a certain land, of neglected surfaces, of the passing and absorption of time.” Clendenin’s art is mixed media, making use of everything from enamel, latex and oil paint to graphite, metal and even coal dust. The reception and exhibit are in the Gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art, located on the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road. Both events are free and open to the public. Clendenin’s work will be on display through Nov. 19. For additional information, call 865-694-6445.
