KnoxvilleFirstFriday.com listings for August, 2010

A note from your host-

If you don’t see a listing, I couldn’t find it when I updated this for this month. Sadly, only a handful of people send me the info for the artist on display each month,  so there’s a lot of  places listed here without the full information. I’m a one man show, and can only dedicated so much time a month to do these updates. If you see a place listed here without any information, and you find they have someone on display this month, mention to the venue that they need to contact me every month with the artist’s name and other info. I can only do so much.

Check here sometime on First Friday, a lot of places don’t send me updates until the last minute, so pop in here before you head out for the latest updates. You’ll find their phone number and  links to their web site in the listing below, so you can check to see if they’ve got more recent info on their own site. Not sure what to expect on First Friday? Here’s a little sample from Knoxville Tourism & Sports

A new gallery has opened- Red Line Gallery!

The arts here have grown a little more- Red Line Gallery in Farragut has opened recently, it’s located at 11519 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN  37934  -  865.288.0277  Red Line Gallery Website
I stopped in and met Natalie and looked around, it’s a beautiful gallery, well lit, and it’s filled with some great art. They’re not hosting openings for first Friday yet, but wanted to let you know they’re open, and to welcome to them to the ever growing art scene here in Knoxville.

Josephine is the wife of Claxton Mayo, whose grandfather started the Mayo Seed business in Knoxville in 1878.

Emporium Center for Arts & Culture / Arts and Culture Alliance / The Balcony Gallery

100 S. Gay Street Knoxville (865) 523-7543  Website

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition featuring oils and acrylics by the South Knoxville Senior (SKS) Painters from August 11-27, 2010 in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville.

The SKS Painters started out at the newly opened South Knoxville Senior Center in October 2007 when Mary Harris volunteered to teach a painting class. Harris, a Knox County native and Powell High graduate, is a self-taught artist who taught oil painting for sixteen years at Vance-Granville Community College in Louisburg, NC. What started out with just one senior citizen has now expanded to an overflowing class and the creation of the “SKS” Painters. While most had never painted before, each had a strong desire and a wish to learn to paint when they retired. With growing fellowship, the class meets every Wednesday for the lessons in putting paint to canvas, etc. Although they are working with different media and different applications on varied surfaces, the class mostly paints in acrylics. Several of the SKS Painters have now experienced the pleasure of having their work not only appreciated but also purchased, and several artists have been commissioned by individuals to paint landscapes, portraits, and historical sites. Along with learning to paint, they have applied their life-learned skills in marketing, social networking, woodworking, photography and computer technology in their art endeavors. These artists have developed their own style and favorite things to paint.

The Arts & Culture Alliance collected more than 2,500 votes from the general public, individual members of the Alliance, and a panel of jurors to select artwork for the Top Choice Exhibition. Top Choice features recent 2-D and 3-D works by 27 artists from Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Ohio. Winner-take-all awards will be given to the three pieces attracting the most cash “votes” before 8:00 PM that evening. The exhibition will be displayed in the main Emporium gallery from August 6-27, and the opening reception features chocolate fondue from The Melting Pot.

The Alliance is pleased to host its second annual Consignment Sale for which artists and members of the Alliance provided new and gently used artwork, antiques, and other eclectic items. This very unique consignment sale takes place in The Balcony at the Emporium on Friday, August 6, from 5:00-9:00 PM as part of First Friday celebrations. The public is invited to peruse and purchase items from local artists, former gallery owners, and art enthusiasts including framed original artwork, antiques, small artsy bric-a-brac, handmade items, fine crafts, and jewelry. One-third of all sales benefit the Arts & Culture Alliance. Some items may still be available for purchase during our additional hours on Saturday, August 7, 11:00 AM -- 3:00 PM.
